Fairfield School Sugarhouse
The Fairfield School Sugarhouse was built in the Fall of 2004 by the Building Trades class at Northwest Technical Center-Bellows Free Academy. Materials for the sugarhouse were donated by community members in Fairfield. The sugarhouse is an opportunity for kids to learn how to produce maple syrup. The middle school does a sugaring unit called "Project Sweet Talk" every year. The sixth grade learns about the history of sugaring, the seventh grade learns about marketing maple syrup, as well as caring for the sugarbush, and the eighth grade learns how to make maple syrup. Mr. John Baxter, the head of school maintenance , teaches the eighth graders how to tap, gather, and boil maple syrup. He does this in the sugarhouse named in honor of Charles Branon, a longtime sugar maker in Fairfield. Mr. Branon had a close association with a company called Leader Evaporator. This company has a worldwide reputation for manufacturing top quality maple sugaring equipment. All of Fairfield Center School's sugaring equipment was graciously donated by Leader Evaporator. We are truly thankful!
